 Overview

Despite being one of the highest rated players in the country, Javier enjoys coaching school children also and in 2006, he used his experience teaching at schools to publish a free electronic book for beginners called "Learn Chess Or Call Me An Idiot", which has been downloaded by thousands of children and adults from all over the world.

Javier has a vast school-coaching experience, having coached more than 30 different schools all over Sydney.
If you wish to know which schools Javier is currently coaching or which schools he has coached in the past, please get in touch with the Sydney Academy of Chess (find details below)

One of the reasons why Javier's lessons at schools are so popular is that kids find them fun, challenging and, most of all, very motivating. Isn't that what being "instructional" is all about? Yes, indeed. However, far from bragging about success, motivating children to learn chess is probably a necessity if chess coaching is to succeed: kids are overloaded with school subjects and if you expect to grab their attention, a fresh approach is needed. We can't forget that these school children spend the whole day in front of books...
Classes are devided in two halves: a theory lesson and a practice lesson. In the practice lesson the kids normally get to play against each other. Depending on their level, a tournament will be arranged. A record of their individual results is kept.

 Technology in the classroom

The days of the demo board are over! Modern technologies play an essential role in chess coaching. All my lessons are done with the aid of a computer and a VGA projector (see snapshots section below). Material is chosen in advance and despite having accumulated a vast amount of original didactic material over the years, often I'll edit new content for the lesson beforehand to accomodate the class' needs.
Electronic pairing systems are used to organize class tournaments. It's really amazing what a difference computers can make. The amount of material which a student can learn in one of my classes has doubled or even trippled since the days of the demo board.
