Click to Expand What makes you a good coach?
If I didn't think I was a good coach, I wouldn't be doing this job. There are many coaches around, but do they really enjoy coaching other people? Do they have the experience to teach? because teaching is a lot more than just being able to play well... Do they spend more time and effort on their students than reasonably expected? Do they love chess and their work? Have they developed training systems for their students? Do they annotate their games? Do they have original files and material that they have worked on for years? Do they offer on-line support? Apart from making a profit, have they contributed in any way to the chess community?
I can reply "Yes, I do" to all those questions...
I'm not saying I'm the only coach who has, but when choosing one, I think you should bear those things in mind.
Click to Expand Do you live in Sydney?
Yes, I live in Sydney at present, in the Eastern suburbs. Just a 10 minutes stroll from Bondi Junction.
Click to Expand How many students do you have?
For private and on-line coaching, I rarely work with more than 10 students. Beware of coaches who work with more because if you add up the number of hours a coach is supposed to spend with his students, the numbers simply can't match!
Click to Expand Which should I choose, on-line coaching or forum based?
It really depends on your needs. Forum coaching offers flexibility, and the different levels scheme can be quite motivating for the student, as he has to work intensively on his assignments, meet the requirements and pass the tests in order to reach the next level. On-line coaching is a one to one learning experience, more direct, more intense.
Click to Expand FC: How do I know youŽll be spending enough time on me?
You will realize when you see it, I assure you! but It's not as easy as you think, I have the following tasks:
  • Replying to posts (I assure you that this can be a very time consuming task when you provide a high quality service!)
  • Editing files requested by students.
  • Annotating games.
  • Creating flash quizzes so that my students can practice the topics.
  • Testing my students, live!.
  • Tracking their progress...
I think you get the picture!
I enjoy coaching people because this is what I've done for a job most of my working life. I've spent many hours of my life trying to find effective training systems which people can use and this represents the results of my experience and dedication. If I offered a bad service, my students would simply run away, and that has never happened. So, you can be certain that I will be spending real time in your training. I'm a professional chess coach and this is all I do for a living.
Click to Expand What happens if chesspupil closes down?
You mean like kasparovchess.com did? chesspupil has been around for many years. I've been a chess coach for more than 15 years and chesspupil.com has been around for nearly a decade.
In the unlikely event that chesspupil had to close down, you would get a refund equivalent to the period of time which we didn't do any training for. I don't think earning a few extra dollars would compensate the wreckage of my reputation as a chess coach.
Click to Expand Your fees are in Euros, I live overseas.
As far as my fees ago, I also provide details in Australian dollars for Australian Students. However, if you don't live in Europe or Australia, there are many sites around which offer information on currency conversion rates. I recommend the following: www.xe.com, as it's fast and really easy to use.
Click to Expand How long does it take before results become noticeable?
That depends on many external factors such as your age, availability, goals, motivation, current level... Professional coaches agree that it would take an average of around 100 hours to pass on real knowledge and efficient methodology to a player of around 1800.
Click to Expand Can I use Paypal to pay for your fees?
Yes, definitely. You can pay by means of credit card, Paypal, Bank transfer. Cash is also an option if you're a private student (i.e. live lessons).
Click to Expand You've opened a nice site and now you want to cash in!
In one word: No. I've devoted a great part of my life to both chess and website technologies. I started with a bulletin board (chessnia bbs) more than 10 years ago and to give you an idea of my experience as a forum manager, I've posted more than 4000 messages on my spanish site, ajedrecista.com alone and many more thousands before that on other sites.
chesspupil's site represents, literally, many hundreds of hours of work. My training plans are based on hard work by my students, but also by me.
